Ukraine in brief:

The 82nd day of the heroic opposition of the Ukrainian people to the russian military invasion continues.

In the north of Ukraine, the situation has not significantly changed. The enemy shelled the border of Sumy Oblast.

In Kharkiv Oblast, the enemy tries to strengthen their military units with special-purpose military units and air defense units. The main efforts of russian occupation troops are focused on maintaining their positions and preventing the advance of Ukrainian troops. The enemy tried to attack in the direction of the village of Ternova, but it was unsuccessful. The Ukrainian army destroyed the enemy’s depot located in Izyum. There was a significant stockpile of ammunition.

The enemy fired on Ukrainian units with mortars, artillery, multiple rocket launchers, and aircraft in the Donetsk direction. Russian occupation troops conducted offensive operations in the area of Shandryholove. In the direction of Lyman, the enemy also does not have any success and tries to strengthen their military units.

In the Severodonetsk direction, the occupiers attacked the area of Borivske and suffered casualties. In the Avdiivka direction, the enemy was noticed near Sukha Balka. They fired on individual positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) with cluster munitions. In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy carried out hostilities in the areas of Toshkivka and Pylypchatyne. In Hirske, the russian occupation troops suffered losses and withdrew. In the Kurakhiv direction, the enemy attacked Maryinka and Novomykhailivka but had no success.

In Mariupol, the enemy focused their efforts on blocking and defeating Ukrainian military units near the “Azovstal” plant. Massive artillery and airstrikes continue.

In Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts, the enemy did not conduct any active hostilities. They damaged civilian infrastructure in Vremivka, Novosilka, Mala Tokmachka, and Novoandriyivka and conducted an airstrike on the settlement of Malynivka.

In the southern oblasts of Ukraine, the enemy did not conduct any active hostilities but shelled civilian infrastructure with artillery and mortars in Oleksandrivka, Shevchenkove, and Novovorontsovka. The AFU fired at the enemy’s ammunition depot near Davydiv Brid, Kherson Oblast.

Northern oblasts

Kyiv

There is still the danger of mine explosions on the outskirts of Kyiv, where the hostilities occurred. Pyrotechnicians continue to demine Pushcha-Vodytsya and Vynohradar districts in the Vyshhorod direction, especially in forests. Since the beginning of the war, payment for public transport in Kyiv has been resumed for the first time.

Kyiv Oblast

In Kyiv Oblast, the water supply was restored in all settlements. Some residential buildings are currently connected to the water supply system. Only some houses in Hostomel remain without a centralized water supply due to the lack of electricity.

Demining continues. Specialists neutralized 34 explosive devices. And the total amount of neutralized mines is 33 016.

Zhytomyr Oblast

Starting today in Zhytomyr, people can get financial aid for families with children from UNICEF. Zhytomyr City Council explained who and how can receive this financial aid.

Zhytomyr Oblast residents paid their last respect to the Ukrainian Defender Serhiy Yakhymovych. He died defending Kharkiv Oblast.

Chernihiv Oblast

The russian occupation troops shelled pre-border settlements in Chernihiv Oblast once again. In the morning, there were about 40 explosions in the direction of Mykolayivka and Hremyach.

This week, the Chernihiv Oblast Administration will begin to restore critical infrastructure objects such as power grids, water utilities, hospitals, and kindergartens. The Administration has allocated 150 million hryvnias for that.

In Nizhyn Raion, a temporary bypass over one of the destroyed bridges on the Chernihiv-Nizhyn-Pryluky-Pyriatyn highway has been completed. The road can already be used.

Two modular towns are planned to be built near Chernihiv for those who lost their homes due to the war. They will be made on the territory of the ski base and in Novoselivka near Chernihiv. 700 people are to receive a place to live.

Sumy Oblast

In the morning, the russian soldiers tried to break through the state border of Ukraine in Sumy Oblast. The enemy opened fire on the border area of Shostka Raion with mortars, grenade launchers, machine guns, and assault rifles. Enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups tried to enter Oblast under cover of fire. Border guards repulsed the russians, and they retreated beyond the state border.

In Trostyanets, everyone can receive free lunches. Every day, volunteers prepare food from products provided by the international humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen which helps with food in emergencies.

Eastern oblasts

Kharkiv Oblast

The russian occupation troops have significantly reduced the intensity of the shelling of Kharkiv. It is happening thanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). However, the danger to the civilians still exists. Over the past 24 hours, the aggressor hit the Shevchenkivskyi District of Kharkiv and Saltivka. 4 people were injured.

The enemy also continues to shell the Oblast settlements. In Chuhuiv Raion, two people were wounded. Three fires broke out in Kharkiv Raion due to the russian shelling. No one was injured.

Today, the russian occupation troops shelled the village of Pechenihy in Kharkiv Oblast. As a result of the shelling, there were four fires. All fires were extinguished entirely. A civilian died because of shrapnel wounds. Another man was injured.

The Kharkiv Oblast Defense Forces hold their positions and carry out successful counter-attacks. Local Territorial Defense units approached the state border north of Kharkiv Oblast. The enemy is trying to focus most of its efforts on maintaining its positions and is preparing to attack near Izyum. The occupiers will receive a decent rebuff from Ukrainian defenders for all their actions.

Donetsk Oblast

The Ukrainian soldiers repulsed seventeen enemy attacks in the Donetsk and Luhansk directions over the past 24 hours. They destroyed three tanks, one artillery system, six units of armored combat vehicles, and an enemy car. The losses of the russian occupiers are currently unknown.

On May 15th, the russians killed three civilians in Donetsk Oblast. Two people died in Drobysheve and one in Toretsk. Another 12 people were injured. Today it became known about 3 civilians who died earlier – two people were found in Siversk and one in Vilne Pole.

Kramatorsk

Air alarms were sounded in the city all day, and distant explosions were heard. There were no official reports of damage or casualties. Druzhkivka was fired upon at night. Enemies struck at a school in the city center.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and local Territorial Defense units are preparing to meet the enemy. The Head of the Donetsk Oblast Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said that the explosion in the Kharkiv Oblast at a warehouse with ammonium nitrate (from which residents of the northern part Donetsk Oblast saw a pillar of smoke) did not pose a threat to the local population. Ammonium nitrate is not a dangerous chemical, and its highest concentration after the explosion is in the cloud, reaching 200-500 meters from the epicenter. Settlements of Donetsk Oblast do not fall into the zone of cloud distribution. Experts are already determining the damage to the environment. The situation is under control.

The coordinator of AUI “Active Community” coordinated the departure to the safe oblast of residents from Severodonetsk, who were able to leave the city. The task was complicated because the family had elderly people who needed special help and a small “zoo” – 8 cats, dogs, hamsters, and even fish.

Pokrovsk and Pokrovsk Raion

The last day in the community was relatively calm, and there were no emergencies. In the office of the Red Cross Society of Pokrovsk, the internally displaced persons (IDPs) received humanitarian aid – personal hygiene products and baby food.

Beginning on May 16th, the Myrnohrad City Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society started to provide charitable assistance – the food kits for people with diabetes who remained living in Myrnohrad (Pokrovsk Raion).

Bakhmut

As of May 16th, private trade facilities are operating in a limited mode in the city. In the Lyman, Bakhmut, and Kurakhiv directions, the enemy continues the offensive, and hostilities continue. The greatest enemy losses over the past day were observed in the Bakhmut and Zaporizhzhia directions. In Bakhmut, medical care was provided to 3 civilians injured in Luhansk Oblast.

The AUI “Active Community” coordinator accepted applications from people for humanitarian aid and prepared for tomorrow’s event for internally displaced children in Cherkasy.

Mariupol

The wives and mothers of Azovstal defenders ask the President of Turkey to assist in the extraction procedure. Mariupol residents are being held in 66 camps in russia. According to British intelligence, the total planned number of places in the camps – 95 thousand. All of them are mostly located in the far east.

The russian occupation forces are trying to cover up the traces of their crimes against humanity in every possible way. Their plan to clear the debris coincides with the places of most significant destruction and demonstrative cynicism of the russian army. First, there was the Drama Theater and Myru prospectus. Now they have taken over the hospital №3, where the bombs were dropped at the beginning of the invasion.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the russians have completely destroyed the homes of many civilians and killed their relatives. Now the occupiers are trying to turn away the falsification of evidence. They offer compensation to locals, but in exchange, Mariupol residents are forced to sign a document stating that their homes were “destroyed by the Ukrainian military” and that their relatives were “killed by the Ukrainian army”.

Luhansk Oblast

Another attack on Severodonetsk and Lysychansk was carried out by the russians this afternoon. Residential buildings caught fire in Lysychansk as a result of enemy shelling. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service worked on the spot. They put out a fire in the local research and production association building.

The russians storm the villages and towns of the Hirske community every day. The occupiers are trying to break through in Toshkivka, Katerynivka, and Zolote. The whole community is suffering from artillery shelling. Mass destruction of the housing sector is recorded, and communications are absent. The shelling killed one person and injured nine others over the weekend. They were provided with medical care in safe places.

Local authorities in the russian-occupied communities re-registered in other Ukrainian cities to not to cooperate with the occupiers and continue their work. They organize the evacuation and timely financing of payments to public sector employees. One such example is Kreminna. The city authorities, headed by Oleksandr Dunts, have resumed the Department of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports activities. Employees were evacuated to safe oblasts of Ukraine. 313 employees organized work remotely.

Southern oblasts

Zaporizhzhia Oblast

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the russian occupiers continue to fire using multiple rocket launchers, artillery, and mortars. There were attempts to fight the counter-battery. The russian military is also shelling civilian infrastructure and peaceful settlements. In particular, in Orikhiv, the invaders damaged three departments of the local hospital and the church of a religious community with artillery strikes. Hulyaypole and Verkhnya Tersa (Polohy Raion) came under fire. In addition, the enemy continues the engineering of already occupied positions.

During the past 24hrs, the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Zaporizhzhia direction destroyed: a tank, 2 multiple rocket launchers “Grad”, 15 armored combat vehicles, 6 vehicles, 2 anti-tank missiles systems, and a russian ammunition depot. In addition, the latest russian BMP-3 with full ammunition was seized. Documents found at the captured position indicate that russian army soldiers from military unit 43057, based in North Ossetia, used to stand there.

Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov said that 45-50% of the population left the city within two months. In Melitopol, mainly remained the elderly or residents who have elderly relatives.

In Berdyansk, there is an invasion of caterpillars, which can cause an ecological catastrophe and destroy the green areas of the community. Mosquitoes also began to appear. Citizens fear that it will also become a significant problem. Usually, the insect population is restrained by treating the city with special chemicals. Currently, this is impossible due to the russian occupation.

A new street of murals has been created in the Zaporizhzhia Military Hospital. Meanwhile, the scandal surrounding the dismissal of Viktor Pysanka (the former head of the hospital) has not subsided. Hospital staff, patients, and citizens continue to speak out in support of him and argue that the hospital has changed for the better during his leadership. The AUI “Active Community” team collected and handed over things (clothes, hygiene products) for wounded military and civilians in city hospitals.

Kherson Oblast

Explosions were heard in Kherson today. The humanitarian crisis is growing in the occupied Kherson Oblast. Locals do not have the opportunity to travel to the territory controlled by Ukraine and have almost limited ability to move around the Oblast. The occupiers did not allow volunteers with humanitarian aid and looted humanitarian goods. In Kherson, the medication will end in two weeks. There are no more solutions for drips, not enough drugs for cardiovascular disease, and not enough oxygen. A significant need for medicines exists in all raions of Kherson Oblast without exception.

Occupation forces continue to abduct civilians. Today, a resident of Oleshky said that the russian military seized her husband Igor Pshonny on April 10th from his home. His whereabouts are currently unknown. About 500 000 people remain in the Oblast. Before the war, there were about a million inhabitants. The locals do not agree with the occupation and in any way show that Kherson Oblast it’s Ukraine.

Mykolaiv Oblast

Yesterday, the russian military used artillery to bombard the villages of Pryshyb and Vesele of the Bereznehuvate community. Two civilians were killed. There are no military facilities in these villages. Over the past day, 15 people were injured in Oblast.

In the early morning, invaders attacked the city of Mykolaiv from multiple launch rocket systems. After the shelling, pyrotechnics cleared the territories of the Central and Inhul districts. Volunteers from the Poltava Oblast delivered over 2 tons of drinking water plus containers to Mykolaiv. Water was also donated by the Izmail City Council of the Odesa Oblast and the Archeparchy of Ternopil-Zboriv of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Odesa Oblast

Explosions again occur in the Odesa Oblast. Russian ocupation troops once again tried to bomb the bridge across the Dniester Estuary with the help of strategic aviation. They hit private houses of civilians in the tourist zone. The total area of destruction was 500 square meters. As a result of the bombardment, four people were injured, including a five-year-old girl.

Ukrainian military defends the Odesa Oblast. Today, they destroyed a russian X-type missile fired from a fighter jet flying in the direction of Odesa. The local authorities emphasize that they control the situation and the need to observe safety rules during air raids. Citizens are active, united, and join in volunteering.

The coordinator of the AUI “Active Community” informed IDPs about humanitarian aid and social and psychological assistance.

Central oblasts

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

On the border with the Kryvyi Rih Raion, the invaders fired at Ukrainian units and settlements from tube artillery and mortars. The enemy is bombarding the Shyroke, Zelenodolsk, and Apostolove communities. The enemy troops are firing from a long distance, as they cannot enter the Oblast’s territory.

More than 225 000 IDPs now live in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Of these, 53 thousand children. They are provided with everything they need. Psychologists work with children. There are more than 91 000 IDPs in Dnipro and more than 39 000 in Kryvyi Rih. These are only those people who have registered. The real figures are about 3 times higher. Rescuers have already defused more than 2000 explosive devices. 1300 of them were in the Kryvyi Rih Raion.

The Techiia Foundation and its chairman, Oleh Krot, provided a batch of helmets and bulletproof vests for the military.

Residents of the Tomakivka community joined the all-Ukrainian project “Gardens of Victory”. The head of the village, Ivan Kalashnyk, said that 30 acres of potatoes and 15 acres of onions had already been planted.

Every day, residents help everyone who needs support. People bring food, clothing, medicine, and hygiene products for IDPs. A sewing workshop was organized in the community. There, volunteers sew tactical combat assault and plate carrier vests and clothes for the defenders of Ukraine.

In Dnipro, officers of the Security Service of Ukraine blocked the operation of a plant under sanctions, which was going to resume the supply of components for the russian military-industrial complex. The AUI “Active Community” coordinator helped draw up the charter for the charitable organization of artists.

Kirovohrad Oblast

There was an air raid alert in the Oblast, signaling the threat of a missile strike. Soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) guarded the borders of the oblast and military facilities, and the local Territorial Defense units kept watch at checkpoints and patrolled the city together with the police. In general, the situation in the Oblast is under control.

Andriy Raikovych, the Head of the Kirovohrad Oblast Military Administration, said that the curfew in the Kirovohrad Oblast would be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. According to the Kirovohrad Oblast Council Chairman, Serhiy Shulha, the authorities intend to implement an inter-municipal project to build a water supply pipeline in four communities of the Kirovohrad Oblast.

On May 19th, the Kirovohrad Oblast Youth Library, named after Evgeniy Malaniuk and US citizen Jeff Shliper invite everyone to the English-language speaking club “Speak Up”. The Kirovohrad Academic Oblast Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater, named after Kropyvnytskyi, will resume performances on May 28th. With the beginning of the russian invasion, the theater suspended work on the stage. Its actors and employees joined the volunteer movement. The theater announced that on May 28th, at 4 p.m., the play “My mother is 100 years old” will be performed on a small stage.

The coordinator of the AUI “Active Community” provided IDPs with advice on obtaining documents on IDP status and shared the information on the available resources of employers in the oblast center and surrounding communities.

The first lot of the Charity Auction “Poltava in Business” has already been awarded to the winner! Air raid sirens often sounded in the city, signaling the threat of a missile attack. The AFU service members have been transferred to an enhanced service mode. The local Territorial Defense units keep watch in the community. In general, the situation was quiet over the past day, and no extraordinary events occurred.

Public utilities operate as normal and are currently provided with fuel and lubricants. Along with active social care for IDPs, the Khmilnyk community does not stop caring for its residents. The community has local social programs designed to help people in difficult life circumstances and support current public initiatives. Thus, since the beginning of the year, the local budget has provided assistance and support to the tune of UAH 873.5 thousand within the frameworks of the Dobro comprehensive program.

The Vinnytsia Oblast Prosecutor’s Office has filed an indictment against a supporter of the “russian world”. The indictee publicly approved of russia’s attack on Ukraine, and supported and promoted the actions of the president of the aggressor country. At the same time, this person resorted to the humiliation of the honor and dignity of the representatives of the state authorities of Ukraine and called for the physical destruction of AFU military personnel.
