Ukraine in Brief:

Day eighty-fifth of Ukrainian people’s heroic struggle against the russian military invasion goes on.

The main efforts of the enemy have been focussed on the direction of Donetsk where aviation, artillery and mortars have been used.

There have been no substantial changes in the situation in Volyn and Polissya directions. A threat of missile and air strikes of civil and military infrastructure from the territory of the republic of belarus remains.

The main effort of the enemy in the Kharkiv Oblast has been aimed at keeping the taken objectives and preventing the Defence Force from advancing deeply into the temporarily occupied territory.

Hostilities in the area of Ternova and Borshchova continue. The enemy is carrying out enhanced air reconnaissance missions.

In Donetsk direction, the enemy has stepped up its offensive and storming actions to improve its tactical positions in certain individual areas.

The enemy had attempted storm attacks in the area of Severodonetsk but sustained losses and had to retract to previously taken objectives. Combat actions in the vicinity of Toshkivka continue. The invaders have been taking offensive actions in the area of Oleksandropil, Yasynuvata Raion, trying to improve their tactical situation near Pylypchatyne, Druzhba and Trypillya, without success though. In the direction of Avdiyivka, the enemy supported by artillery has been launching storm attacks in the area of Novobakhmutivka yet had to retreat after taking casualties. In Kurakhovo direction, the aggressor supported by rocket artillery and heavy flamethrowing systems has been attacking the areas of Stepne, Slavne and Maryinka – but unsuccessfully. There have been no attacks in Lyman direction, enemy activities being limited to the shelling of civil infrastructure around Ozerne and Lyman.

There has been no active enemy combat action in the Mykolayiv Oblast. The invaders have been using mortar and conventional artillery to cover measures of engineering improvement of their positions. The enemy task force has been strengthened with radioelectronic warfare units.

The enemy continues administrative and policing measures on the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine violating the rights and freedoms of peaceful civilians, prohibiting free movement as well as movement onto territories under control of the government of Ukraine.

Northern Oblast

Kyiv

The Embassy of Switzerland has resumed operation in Kyiv.

More than 860 employees of road and transport servicing communal enterprises of Kyiv joined the AFU and TDF to defend Ukraine.

Six communal cinemas will resume operation by late May in Kyiv: three will restart work on 21 May and another three, on 26 May.

Kyiv Oblast

Mine clearing of de-occupied territories continues. Blast technicians have rendered safe 340 explosive devices in the past 24 hours and a total of 34,080 of them since the beginning of the war.

Two men tripped an anti-tank mine in the Oblast and were lucky to survive.

An invader who raped women in the Oblast has been served with charges by the Kyiv Prosecutor Office.

More than 4,500 private buildings and residential tower blocks have been flattened in hostilities in the Oblast. Critical damage was dealt to Bucha, Irpin, Gostomel, Borodyanka, Makariv, Velyka Dymerka and Pisky territorial communities. Monitoring groups keep documenting the devastaion.

Zhytomyr Oblast

There was an air raid alert since the last evening.

Servicemen of Sokoly Polissya Territorial Defence Unit in the Oblast completed air assault training to improve their physical readiness and firearms handling skills.

Two more religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchy in the Zhytomyr and Novohrad-Volynskyi Raions have switched for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The local government in Zhytomyr is looking for premises to accommodate in the coming academic year the pupils of Lyceum No. 25 destroyed by russian missile strike.

Chernihiv

In the evening of 18 May, the russian troops shelled twice the border village of Gremyach, Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion. There was a total of around 30 incoming fires from hand grenade launchers and mortars.

Urban transport – buses and public taxi buses – have returned to the streets of Chernihiv.

A tractor driver hit an UXO in the woods near the village of Mazhyhivka, Chernihiv Oblast, causing detonation.

Sumy Oblast

The russian troops on the territory of the rf fired the national border in the Oblast in the evening. Fires have been registered along the whole border line in the Sumy Oblast in the evening of 18 May. Ten explosions were heard in Glukhiv Raion, and mortar fire was registered in the Velyka Pysarivka community. Russian artillery pummeled Bilopillya and the Putyvl community.

Mine clearing operation continues on de-occupied territories. 16 UXOs have been rendered safe in the past 24 hours in the Oblast.

Eastern Oblasts

Kharkiv Oblast

High-intensity hostilities continue in the Kharkiv Oblast. The Russian occupiers are trying to keep the occupied frontiers in the Kharkiv direction, to conduct counterattacks. Ukrainian defenders inflict serious losses on the enemy.

In the Izyum direction, the enemy, with the support of artillery, conducted offensive operations in the area of ​​Velyka Komyshuvakha. In some areas, they suffered significant losses and were forced to retreat.

Today at 4 am the russian occupiers fired again at the Kyiv district of Kharkiv. The projectile hit the boiler room of the Institute of Endocrine Pathology. According to preliminary data, no one was injured. The village of Tsyrkuny, Kharkiv district, was also shelled. Two private households were damaged. A 63-year-old woman who was injured in the shelling in Loziv district was hospitalized last night.

In total, during the day the occupiers fired on Tsyrkuny, Prudyanka, Vilhuvatka – 3 civilians were injured. Yesterday afternoon Saltivka and Pyatihatki were fired upon again and had 3 victims.

People are returning en masse to Kharkiv and the deoccupied settlements of the oblast.

Donetsk Oblast

The night in the Donetsk Oblast was relatively calm, and all attempts to attack the enemy in the Avdiivka, Mariinsky and Bakhmut areas were successfully repulsed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Sixteen enemy attacks were repulsed in the Donetsk and Luhansk directions last night, eight tanks, seventeen units of armoured combat vehicles, four special armoured vehicles and six ordinary enemy vehicles were destroyed.

Kramatorsk

No enemy hostilities were recorded in Kramatorsk.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine and Territorial Defence are preparing to meet the enemy.

More and more people are returning home. There is a problem with finding fuel, repairing cars, and providing medicines.

The general situation in the oblast remains alarming, especially given yesterday’s and today’s shelling of Bakhmut, Mykolayivka and Soledar.

The coordinator of the Active Community AUI has optimized the work of humanitarian aid centres so that residents from different districts have the opportunity to receive assistance closer to their place of residence.

Pokrovsk and Pokrovsky Raion

The night in the Donetsk Oblast was relatively calm, and all attempts by the russians to attack in the Avdiyivsky and Mariinsky directions were successfully repulsed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

During the day the enemy fired on the settlements: Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka.

Representatives of the local Territorial defence were on duty in the community.

No casualties or damage were reported in Pokrovsk. Utilities work in a regular mode. Volunteer clean up and community landscaping work are underway.

Police in Pokrovsk evacuated more than 50 people from Maryanka.

300 sets of hygienic products for people in need of social attention and support have arrived in the city of Pokrovsk.

Thanks to the cooperation with the Pokrovsky Crisis Support Center “Together”, the community received cargo from the International Organization for Migration IOM Ukraine.

Bakhmut

In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy launched an offensive to improve the tactical situation. He tried to carry out assault operations in the area of ​​the settlement of Zolote-4 but was unsuccessful:

The enemy struck another air strike on Bakhmut. The shells hit a five-story building, a private house and an office building. In a private house, rescuers pulled 6 people out of the rubble, their condition is satisfactory. The entire entrance to the five-story building was destroyed. According to preliminary information, no one was injured. The russians continue to shoot at civilians, but timely evacuation can save hundreds of lives. Of Bakhmut’s 73,000 inhabitants, just over 20,000 remain in the city, leaving fewer casualties than the enemy expects.

Since the beginning of the aggressor’s invasion of Ukraine, 392 civilians have been killed and 1,103 wounded in shelling and bombing in the Donetsk oblast.

The coordinator of AUI “Active Community” was engaged in the registration of persons in need of humanitarian assistance in the Donetsk oblast, and prepared for the master class, which will be held on May 20 in Cherkasy.

Mariupol

The Red Cross has announced the registration of all Azovstal soldiers, including servicemen leaving the enterprise, which allows the ICRC to monitor the fate of detainees and help them stay in touch with their families.

Luhansk Oblast

The russians have been shelling Severodonetsk since the morning. At least eight houses were damaged in the city, some of them were on fire – individual apartments and entire entrances. On May 18, four people were killed and three others were wounded in the city.

The invaders used aircraft to destroy civilian facilities in the areas of the settlements of Loskutivka, Katerynivka and Orikhove. They carried out assaults in the Ustynivka and Zolote-4 areas, but were unsuccessful. These settlements have numerous destructions. Damage to houses was also registered in Vrubivka, Nyrkove and Komyshuvakha.

37 residents of Severodonetsk, Lysychansk and Bilohorivka were evacuated under heavy shelling.

Southern oblasts

Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Despite the failures, the enemy troops do not give up their attempts to further advance on the territories controlled by Ukraine.

In the east of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the russians periodically try to carry out attacks and counterattacks. In the depths of the front, the invaders create quite powerful lines of fortifications, in some areas they dig anti-tank ditches and trenches.

Over the past day, the Defense Forces in the Zaporizhzhia sector destroyed 3 armored combat vehicles, 2 motor vehicles, and an Eleron unmanned aerial vehicle.

The invaders continue to block the exit of people from Vasylivka to the territory controlled by Ukraine. For the second day in a row, more than 1,000 cars with women and children stay in front of the russian checkpoint.

The invaders continue to shell settlements and civilian infrastructure. In particular, the village of Novoyakovlivka (the Komyshuvakha territorial community) was shelled during the past day. As a result of shelling, one person was killed, some houses were damaged and destroyed, and a preschool educational institution was ruined.

The UN has provided construction materials for the urgent repair of private houses in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, damaged by russian troops’ shelling.

According to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, 8 monuments suffered from russian shelling and looting in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast – the historical and architectural reserve “Popov Manor House”, a memorial stele to ATO fighters in Enerhodar, the railway station “Zaporizhzhia-2”, the Melitopol Museum of Local Lore, the former synagogue and the church of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk in Huliaipolie, the house of culture in the village of Mala Tokmachka, the spa complex on the island of Khortytsia in Zaporizhzhia.

Russian telegram channels have reported that the invaders plan to make the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to work for russia and then sell electric power to Ukraine.

On May 18, a fire broke out in the Sosnovyi Bir hotel complex in Enerhodar. The fire was extinguished by units of the State Emergency Service. The cause of the fire is tentatively said to be the illegal restructuring of the complex, initiated by a collaborator, a former MP from the Opposition Platform for Life, Andriy Shevchyk.

The occupying authorities are destroying Ukrainian literature in the libraries of Melitopol.

A russian military armored train carrying ammunition from the territory of the annexed Crimea derailed in Melitopol. Several cars overturned, and the ammunition in the cars detonated. Russian invaders blame Ukrainian guerrillas for this.

Mykolaiv Oblast

Over the past day in the Mykolaiv Oblast there were four fires as a result of shelling of the territories of the city of Mykolaiv and the Oblast by russian militants. Pyrotechnic teams removed 11 explosive munitions.

Mykolaiv volunteer entrepreneurs donated five minibuses to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The vehicles were imported from Lithuania.

Central oblasts

Kirovohrad Oblast

An air raid alert was issued – there was a threat of a missile strike. Servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine guarded the borders of the oblast and military facilities. The local Territorial Defense units kept watch at checkpoints and patrolled the city together with the police.

On the Alley of Glory of the Far Eastern Cemetery of Kropyvnytskyi, relatives, friends, fellow countrymen, and comrades-in-arms said goodbye to 5 warriors-heroes.

Almost 600 IDPs found a new home in the Nova Praha community in the Kirovohrad Oblast. More than 130 of them settled in Pantaziivka. Residents of the community came up with an initiative to restore an apartment building located on the territory of the village for the needs of IDPs.

The coordinator of the AUI “Active Community” held an art therapy event “Vyshyvanka embroidered shirt: the magic code of the nation” in the center of Kropyvnytskyi on Teatralna street, which was attended by about 30 local citizens and internally displaced persons.

Poltava Oblast

Two russian servicemen will face the court in the Poltava Oblast for shelling the Kharkiv Oblast from the Grad multiple rocket launchers. Following a criminal order, enemy troops destroyed infrastructure facilities and residential buildings in Kozacha Lopan, Kharkiv Oblast. They also destroyed an educational institution in the Derhachi community. After the defeat of the russian military convoy by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, two russian soldiers were taken prisoner on the territory of the Kharkiv Oblast. Under Ukrainian law, their actions are punishable by imprisonment for a term of eight to twelve years.

Artists Anton Kravchenko and Oleksandr Fastovets have completed their work to paint a patriotic mural. Western Oblasts 

Lviv Oblast

The modular towns will show performances for people who have found refuge in Lviv. The first interactive play was shown by “Mischievous Frog Today”.

Rivne Oblast

The area is calm, there were no air alarms. The Armed Forces of Ukraine patrol the border with belarus. Representatives of the local Territorial Defense units are patrolling and on duty at checkpoints.

Rivne Oblast’s Military Administration provides systematic information on fuel at gas stations.

The service station team in Rivne is repairing cars for the Armed Forces free of charge – three dozen cars have already been repaired.

106,000 stews were purchased for internally displaced citizens living in Rivne.

Citizens are united, help volunteer headquarters financially and immaterially.

Coordinators of AUI”Active Community” conducted a master class for adults and children temporarily living in Rivne, on coloring gingerbread cookies, which was attended by about thirty participants.

Khmelnytskyi Oblast

Khmelnytskyi

The situation in the community is under control.

A trolleybus with photos of Ukrainian hero cities left Bogdan Khmelnytsky Street. In the cabin, passengers can see photos of Mariupol, Okhtyrka, Bucha, Gostomel, Kharkiv, Kherson – a total of 10 cities. Pictures in the trolleybus were hung on the occasion of Heroes’ Day, which will be celebrated on May 23.

An exhibition of Podolsk embroideries has opened in the Khmelnytsky Museum of History. The exhibition presents 23 shirts from the collection of Svetlana Delikatna. Some – about 100 years. Ethnic costumes were presented for the International Museum Day and the Embroidery Day.

The team of AUI “Active Community” worked with IDPs, participated in the organization of events for the Day of Embroidery: organized a bike ride in embroidered shirts on Bakota, as well as held an art event to make souvenirs.

Kamianets-Podilskyi

Air raids sounded in the city yesterday. In the russian media RIA Novosti announced that in Kamianets-Podilskyi in civilian facilities equipped positions with artillery and MLRS. In fact, this is another fake. However, the mayor once again reminded residents that air alarm signals should not be ignored.

Today, deputies of the Polish Parliament Marcin Kulasek, Przemyslaw Koperski and Stefan Krajewski paid a friendly visit to the community and said that Poland is ready to continue to fully support Ukraine and help the city. City officials discussed with them the possibility of improving the health of Ukrainian children in summer camps in Poland, attracting volunteers to teach children the Polish language, support the city’s communal sphere.

Chernivtsi Oblast (Bukovyna)

The situation in Chernivtsi oblast is calm and under control.

Bukovyna paid its last respects to the two heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine in fierce battles against rashist invaders.

Chernivtsi Oblast Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support appealed to volunteers and concerned citizens to provide medical backpacks, individual first aid kits and turnstiles for the needs of servicemen who take courses in tactical medicine and home care in emergency situations.

Humanitarian aid from the Ukrainian Peace Foundation has arrived in Bukovyna. About 200 units of medical supplies were delivered to the region. These are oxygen masks, bandages, gloves, surgical instruments, infusion systems, antiseptics, etc. The benefactors also sent medical beds with mattresses and wheelchairs.

The team of AUI “Active Community” in Chernivtsi prepared a holiday for the Embroidery Day, which was attended by families from Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Kryvyi Rih, Bakhmut, Kherson, Lozova. For them were organized an excursion in the workshop-chamber of folk crafts and decorative art, a master class on knitting scarves and joint writing of leaflets to the military.

Zakarpattia Oblast

In Zakarpattia, the oblast leadership is actively cooperating with international partners in order to re-equip and reconstruct buildings for comfortable living of IDPs. Officials have already identified locations that can be repurposed for medium-term housing. In turn, the International Organization for Migration has selected several places where it is ready to start work.

A charity concert in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was held on the Independence Embankment in Uzhgorod in honor of the Embroidery Day. The concert was performed by the folk and ethnographic ensemble “Uzhgorod” of the city leisure center – the House of Culture. The funds raised during the concert were donated to the NGO “Volunteers of Zakarpattia”.

The coordinator of AUI “Active Community” advised the Charitable Foundation “Tree of Life” on how to find resources to expand the geography of the Foundation’s activities and to provide psychological assistance to victims of the war in Zakarpattia.
