Ukraine in brief:
The 87th day of the heroic opposition of the Ukrainian people to the russian military invasion continues.
The greatest activity of the enemy continues to be concentrated in the Eastern Operational Zone.
In the north of Ukraine, the situation has not undergone significant changes. The enemy fired at the settlements of Semenivka, Bleshnia, and Hirsk in the Chernihiv Oblast. Russians launched missile attacks on targets in the Zhytomyr and Poltava oblasts.
In the Kharkiv Oblast, the enemy continues to conduct hostilities to hold the occupied positions. During the day, the enemy carried out artillery shelling in the areas of the settlements of Velyka Komyshuvakha and Dovhenke in the Kharkiv Oblast.
In the Donetsk sector, the enemy is trying to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops and reach the administrative borders of the Luhansk Oblast. The enemy fired, using the entire range of weapons, including aviation, on the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Force units and civilian targets along the line of contact. In addition, russians launched airstrikes on civilian infrastructure facilities in the areas of the settlements of Vrubivka in the Luhansk Oblast and Bakhmut in the Donetsk Oblast. The enemy continues to prepare for an offensive in the Lyman sector. With the support of aviation and artillery, the invaders conducted assault operations in the areas of the settlements of Lypove, Vasylivka, Marinka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk Oblast but failed in that. The enemy inflicted an airstrike on the territory of Mykilske, Volnovakha Raion in Donetsk Oblast.
The enemy fired on civilian infrastructure in the areas of the settlements of Vremivka in the Donetsk Oblast and Olhivske, Zatyshshia, Huliaipolie, Orikhiv, Novodanylivka, and Kamianske in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
In the Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts, the invaders did not conduct active hostilities. The main efforts were focused on holding the occupied boundaries and conducting reconnaissance and activities to equip and strengthen their positions. They continue mortar and artillery shelling of settlements near the contact line.
The enemy suffers heavy losses in the war waged on the territory of Ukraine. Defenders of Ukraine continue to defend Ukrainian land heroically.
Northern oblasts
Kyiv Oblast
Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa visited Irpin. He saw firsthand the levels of destruction and violence that are absolutely horrendous. Also, the city, ruined by russian occupation troops, was visited by Simone Luedtke, the burgomaster of the German city of Borna.
Thanks to Starlink stations, the Kyiv Oblast educational process is being resumed. The Starlink satellite Internet station was donated to the school in the village of Andriyivka, Makariv Raion.
Chernihiv Oblast
Today, mortar shelling was registered in the direction of the villages of Hremiach, Mykolaivka, and Kucherivka.
Sumy Oblast
Russian occupation troops continue to shell the Bilopillia community on the border with russia. A russian helicopter fired a missile at the outskirts of one of the settlements on the border between the Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts. In the afternoon, the Sumy Oblast was shelled by Grad MLRS from the territory of russia. In total, about 15 shots were made.
Eastern oblasts
Kharkiv Oblast
Over the past day, the russian invaders fired at Oleksiyivka and Saltivka using multiple launch rocket systems. In the evening, shelling caused a fire in the pavilions of one of the Kharkiv city’s markets.
In the Oblast the enemy shelled Derhachi, Mala Danylivka, Chuhuiv Raion, and Tsyrkuny. The missile strike destroyed the House of Culture in Lozova.
The invaders fired at the Zolochiv community at night, and some residential houses caught fire. In total, 20 people were wounded during the day due to russian aggression. A 66-year-old woman was killed in Derhachi.
In the Kharkiv Oblast, the enemy tries to hold the occupied positions. The hottest situation is in the Izium sector. But the Ukrainian troops hold their ground and do not allow the enemy to move forward. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) liberated Vilkhivka, which had been under occupation since the first days of the full-scale war. After the liberation, the village gradually returns to normal life. In the village, the invaders destroyed almost 90% of the houses. Currently, law enforcement officers record all the crimes of the russian army.
Donetsk Oblast
Eleven enemy attacks were repulsed in the Donetsk and Luhansk sectors over the past day; eight tanks, three artillery systems, ten armored combat vehicles, three special armored vehicles, and six enemy motor vehicles were destroyed.
On May 20th, the invaders killed three more civilians in the Donetsk Oblast, all three in the Lyman community: in Lyman, Novoselivka, and Sosnove. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, we know russians have killed about 400 civilians in the Donetsk Oblast. Another 5 people were wounded today.
Kramatorsk
Explosions and large-caliber artillery have been heard in the city throughout the day. Some damage has been reported with no information about casualties to date. The AFU and local Territorial Defense units prepared themselves to meet the enemy.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has obtained irrefutable evidence of russian invaders’ complicity in the missile strike of the railway station in Kramatorsk on April 8th, which left 61 killed and 121 wounded. A range of investigations into the missile trajectory and other factors have allowed establishing the strike was dealt from the territory of the Donetsk Oblast under temporary occupation by russia since 2014. The experts confirm a guided single-stage solid-fuel 9М79-1 missile, widely known as Tochka-U, with a submunition charge. According to the SSU, several Tochka-U systems have been stationed and used for eight years on the occupied territories of Donetsk Oblast. SSU investigation officers continue their job adding the body of evidence to the criminal proceedings under Art. 438 (Breach of Laws and Customs of War) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Standing in the line to get humanitarian aid, one can hear many stories from the locals. One of them is from a woman who lost her home to shelling. The documents went up in flames, and she cannot officially register or claim compensation from the government yet. It is impossible to reinstate the documents officially as the local government authorities are inoperative. Thanks to volunteers, she is receiving foodbank aid, and, despite all the hardships, she can look after a dozen stray animals in her care.
The situation in the community is of utter fragility. The news of the natural gas supply cut published by a media outlet has contributed to panicky moods among the residents. The situation around Bakhmut, Slovyansk, and Siversk only add to the gloom.
An AUI “Active Community” coordinator has arranged a city-seeing tour for French journalists. The media representatives have been able to talk to the local victims of the shelling and show the real situation in the city.
Pokrovsk and Pokrovsk Raion
The russians supported by artillery and aviation, are on an offensive on the population center of Novomykhaylivka (to the west from Donetsk and the south from Maryinka); the hostilities continue. The invaders made an unsuccessful attempt to attack in the direction of Maryinka.

The planting ceremony also involved Kirovohrad Oblast Military Administration Head Andriy Raikovych, deputy mayor Oleksandr Mosin and City Council Secretary Oleh Koliuka. The action of presenting saplings from the Pokrovsk nursery Roses and Gardens of Donbas to cities of Ukraine kicked off on the initiative of City Mayor Ruslan Trebushkin. The enemy troops are strengthening their positions and increasing the number of checkpoints. The invading ‘government’ has been working in a typical mode. The occupation persists. The city mayor is working remotely and partaking in volunteer efforts.
Residents of the occupied raion are exhausted; some are rather exasperated about the lack of change in the situation. Those able are leaving the city and the Oblast though the invaders sometimes ban people from leaving the city. A new military administration has been proclaimed; it attempts to govern the raion.
The situation in Skadovsk Raion remains critical, with foodstuffs being brought in from the Crimea, pharmacies closed (medicine exchange being the only option), and bank institutions inoperative. The utility companies operate a half-day mode. The number of collaborators increases. There are many volunteers, though.
An AUI “Active Community” coordinator has assessed the situation in the raion and prepared recommendations for IDPs for those requesting such information.
