Northern Oblasts

Kyiv

Russian troops attacked Kyiv with attack drones. No one was injured in the city as a result of the air defense operation and falling debris. Drones attacked the capital in groups, waves and from different directions. This is already the sixth russian attack on Kyiv in December.

The Soviet monument “Taraschanets” was dismantled in Kyiv. It will be kept in the museum-workshop of Znoba-Golembievski. A monument to the Heroes of the russian-Ukrainian War is planned to be erected in its place.

In the capital, a viburnum avenue was planted in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack in Olenivka. A living alley was laid in Holosiivsky Park. Relatives planted more than 50 viburnum saplings – in honor of each of the fallen defenders of Mariupol by tree.

Kyiv Oblast

The air alert lasted almost five hours. Air defense forces worked in the region. “Shaheds” tried to hit military and civilian objects. No hits or damage to critical and civil infrastructure were recorded. There are no casualties.

In the Kyiv Oblast, they agreed to pay almost UAH 800 million in compensation for damaged housing under the “eRecovery” program. In total, since the beginning of the program, residents of the oblast have submitted almost 11,800 applications, positive decisions on the payment of funds have been made for 7,400.

Zhytomyr Oblast

In Zhytomyr, they checked the information about the bombing of the “Metro” shopping center. About 100 people were evacuated.

The Orthodox Church of russia has released the “Patriarchal Calendar”, which includes all active bishops of the russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the moscow Patriarchate. Among them are Metropolitan Nikodim of Zhytomyr and Novohrad-Volyn and Metropolitan Vissarion of Ovruch and Korosten.

Chernihiv Oblast

Airstrikes and shelling from mortars and anti-aircraft guns: last day, the russians attacked the border areas of Chernihiv Oblast.

In the sky over Ukraine on the night of December 16, 30 Shaheds were destroyed, in particular, over Chernihiv Oblast.

The Republic of Latvia allocated 5 million euros from its budget for the reconstruction of Chernihiv Oblast. Latvian President Edgars Rinkevichs called Chernihiv Oblast a priority region of Ukraine, which Latvia will provide assistance in reconstruction within three years.

Sumy Oblast

During the day, the russian military carried out 11 shellings of the territory of the Sumy Oblast. 41 explosions were recorded. Four communities came under fire from the territory of the russian.

On December 16, the russian army fired mortars at 4 communities of Sumy Oblast. 13 explosions were recorded.

Eastern Oblasts

Kharkiv Oblast

More than 20 settlements in the Kharkiv Oblast were subjected to russian artillery and mortar shelling. In the village of Boguslavka, Izyum raion, a private house caught fire as a result of an enemy attack, previously by a “Shahed” drone.

435 subscribers in the Kharkiv Oblast— without gas: a gas pipeline was damaged during russian shelling. As a result of hostilities in the oblast, more than 16,000 consumers remain without electricity.

Nine russian assaults were repulsed by the Defense Forces in the area of Sinkivka in the Kupyansk direction. The russian transfers the reserve of assault battalions to the Kupyan direction, trying to compensate for losses. The occupier wants to seize the village of Synkivka in order to create a bridgehead for the occupation of Kupyansk.

A 15-year-old teenager received injuries to his hands due to the detonation of an explosive device. It happened in the Izyum raion. The boy picked up an unknown explosive device in a forest plantation. He has a traumatic amputation of the fingers of the right hand and the finger of the left hand.

Donetsk Oblast

During the past day, there were no casualties or injuries as a result of shelling by the russian army. The occupiers attacked the front-line communities and cities of Avdiyivka and Kurakhove.

Since February 24, 2022, the russians have killed 1,790 civilians of Donetsk Oblast, wounded another 4,337. The number of victims in Mariupol and Volnovakha is currently unknown.

On the eastern front, over the past day, December 15, the Ukrainian military repelled 82 assaults by the russian invaders. The Avdiyivka and Bakhmut directions remain the most active.

In the Lyman-Kupiansk direction, the russians began to use “self-propelled” drones to replace the Lancet technological drones. There are more of them and they are quite effective.

A state of emergency was imposed in Donetsk Oblast due to abnormal weather and broken power lines. 45 thousand subscribers remain without electricity.

Kramatorsk and Kramatorsk raion

Three streets were fired upon in the Lysychansk direction in Serebryanka, Siversk community. 4 shellings of the Lyman community were recorded.

Pokrovsk and Pokrovsk raion

Russians with anti-aircraft missiles shelled the center of the city of Kurakhove with fragmentation shells, several high-rise buildings and private houses were damaged. This is the third massive shelling of the city in the last two days.

In the Donetsk direction, Krasnohorivka, Novomykhailivka and Kostyantynivka were fired upon in the Maryinka community.

The russian occupiers do not have significant success around Avdiyivka and cannot gain a foothold on new frontiers. To date, they have progressed only in the “gray zone”.

Bakhmut and Bakhmut raion

In the Horlivka direction, 5 houses in the Chasiv Yar community were damaged, Rozdolivka of the Soledar community was shelled.

Luhansk Oblast

In the occupied Lysychansk, the russians, intensifying forced passporting, have not been able to open the passport desk for more than a year. People are forced to go to other cities.

Southern Oblasts

Mykolayiv Oblast 

On December 15, russian troops launched artillery strikes on Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities of the Mykolayiv Oblast four times. There are no injuries or deaths.

On the night of December 16, two attack drones of the “Shahed-131/136” type were destroyed over the Mykolayiv Oblast.

In Mykolayiv, civilians were trained to stop critical bleeding according to the algorithm of the American College of Surgeons “Stop the Bleed”.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast

The occupiers hit 19 towns and villages of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, 107 strikes were recorded. As a result of an attack by russian military personnel, a residential building was damaged. Civilians were not injured.

In the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the russians are taking out metal from captured industrial facilities. It is transported to the russian federation through the port in Berdyansk.

Hospitals in the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast lack medical workers, drugs and modern equipment. And to get to the doctor, you need to have a russian passport and an insurance pole.

In the Zaporizhzhia area, the Defense Forces repelled eight attacks by the russian army west of Novopokrovka and south of Robotyne.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been reconnected to its only backup power line after it was suddenly lost two weeks ago. But the overall power plant supply outside the site remains unstable and vulnerable to further disruptions.

A new shelter for displaced persons, in particular, for the elderly, was opened in Zaporizhzhia. 40 people can live there at the same time. Accommodation is free.

Odesa Oblast 

A social and psychological support center for internally displaced persons has been opened in Odesa, which can accommodate up to 150 people. The entire complex of internal and external works has been carried out in the building, all necessary networks have been connected, furniture has been furnished and the territory has been landscaped. Preference in accommodation is given to those who cannot afford to rent housing.

Kherson Oblast

During the night drone attack of the russian federation in the Kherson Oblast, air defense units destroyed 9 russian drones. Debris from downed UAVs damaged the administration building and a medical facility in the Kherson raion.

Yesterday, the russian army shelled the Kherson Oblast 83 times with various types of weapons. Four people were injured.

Also, russian shells hit near the hospital in Stepanivka, a doctor who was at the workplace was injured.

As of December 16, 2023, law enforcement officers found 18 places where the russian military illegally detained and tortured Ukrainians in the de-occupied territories of the Kherson Oblast.

Three children returned to Ukraine through the mediation of Qatar. The brother and sister, born in 2008 and 2011, who were taken out of the occupied Kherson Oblast, have already met their mother. Another boy, whom his father took to russia without his mother’s knowledge, has already met her on the territory of Georgia.

Central Oblasts

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

Two people were injured in Nikopol due to shelling by the russian army on December 15. This is an 83-year-old woman and her 16-year-old granddaughter. In the city, in particular, a store, 14 houses, and ten farm buildings were damaged.

Two unmanned aerial vehicles of the “Shahed” type destroyed air defense forces in the evening of December 15 over the Synelnykove raion of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Debris fell on the building of a private enterprise. There, the roof caught fire. Rescuers extinguished the fire. There are no casualties or injuries.

Three men were wounded by shelling in Nikopol during the day, December 16. A five-story building, five private houses, two outbuildings and an excavator were also damaged. Power lines were also affected. More than 100 families are without electricity.

A year ago, on December 16, 2022, a rocket of the russian army hit a high-rise building in Kryvyi Rih. After that 5 people died, 11 more were injured. Currently, the first entrance, which was hit by the rocket, has been demolished. Some of the wounded are still undergoing rehabilitation.

Residents of Dnipro went to a rally under the walls of the city council. They demand spending more money from the city budget to support the army.

Kirovohrad Oblast

An Alternative Christmas Tree fair was held in Oleksandria to help volunteers raise money for the needs of the military. The participants managed to raise almost UAH 27 thousand. The money will be transferred to the Volunteer Coordination Center for the needs of the military.

The Center for Culture and Leisure hosted a charity concert and recital by local poet Nadiya Dubohrai, where she presented her debut collection of poetry, “How are you?”. As a result, the event raised UAH 6,806 to support the military. All the funds will be used for the needs of the 14th Assault Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine “Chervona Kalyna”.

Poltava Oblast

A memorial plaque was unveiled in Poltava in memory of fallen teacher Pavlo Kyrylenko. He taught history at Poltava Gymnasium No. 35, but when the full-scale war began, he volunteered to go to the front. On Teacher’s Day last year, he was killed in Kharkiv Oblast.  

The new shelter was set up at the Kotliarevskyi College of Culture and Arts in Hadiach. It is located in the basement of the educational building. The shelter is ready to accommodate up to 50 students, pupils, and teachers. The shelter was built at the expense of the college.

Vinnytsia Oblast

In Vinnytsia Oblast, air defense forces shot down one Shahed drone during a night attack by russian federation.

In Vinnytsia, doctors removed a metal fragment from a patient’s ventricle. The operation was performed on a working organ without stopping blood circulation. The man is currently feeling well, undergoing postoperative rehabilitation and preparing for discharge.

Western Oblasts

Rivne Oblast

On December 16, relatives of Azov’s prisoners of war from Rivne Oblast organized a peaceful rally in the center of Rivne.

A volunteer from Rivne, Serhii Partas, collects and sends wetsuits to the frontline. The soldiers use them when they need to cross water obstacles.

Volyn Oblast

On the third day after the de-blockade, the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing point fully restored its capacity. During the day, 695 trucks with imports and 546 with exports were cleared. Another 1,700 trucks are waiting to enter Ukraine.

Lviv Oblast

Lviv Oblast has strengthened its air defense, in particular to protect against russian missile attacks. Also, 45 mobile groups have been created to shoot down the “Shahed”.

Ukrainian actor and fighter of the 103rd terrorist defense brigade Maksym Devizorov received the Order of Merit, III class. He has been defending the country since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Khmelnytskyi Oblast

In Khmelnytskyi, border guards were posthumously awarded state decorations. Orders of Courage were presented to the families of the fallen soldiers. 

The All-Ukrainian boxing tournament in memory of Yevhen Kuzhelnyi continues in Khmelnytskyi. 

The winners of the tournament are awarded the title of Master of Sports of Ukraine.

Chernivtsi Oblast 

Volodymyr Moshkola, a serviceman of the joint assault brigade of the National Police of Ukraine ”Лють’ (“Rage”) and a resident of the Kamianska community, was awarded the Golden Cross for exemplary performance of combat missions.

Due to the full-scale invasion of Chernivtsi, nearly 70 businesses were evacuated. About half of them have already returned to work in their regions. These are mostly businesses from the central and northern regions of Ukraine. Some of them have opened their branches in Chernivtsi.

Uliana Mariusyk, the mother of a fallen soldier from Bukovyna, Junior Sergeant Ivan Marusyk, purchased a playground for her kindergarten at her own expense. She did it in memory of her hero son. Her son was very fond of children, so the woman is sure he would have been happy with this gift for the kids.

In 14 educational institutions of Bukovyna, 21 interactive educational exhibitions “Mental Treck” were held, which teaches young people to take care of their own mental health in everyday life and crisis situations, as well as to be tolerant and help people with mental disorders. The exhibition was attended by 1113 people.

Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast

In the Bastion Fortress Gallery in Ivano-Frankivsk, representatives of the Angels Next Door child development center are holding a “Give a Child a Kindergarten” event. At the event, they are selling handmade items. Most of them were made by the center’s visitors. The fair also includes master classes for children.

Zakarpattia Oblast

The deputy who detonated grenades at a session of the Keretsky village council in Zakarpattia the day before was suspected of committing a terrorist attack with grave consequences. He regained consciousness in the hospital and is under the supervision of doctors and law enforcement officers. According to updated reports, 23 people, including the suspect, were injured in the explosion.

About 170,000 children in Zakarpattia received humanitarian and other assistance from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) this year. Next year, the international organization’s team in the region plans to continue working in various areas. UNICEF representatives discussed the results of the year and plans for future cooperation with the regional authorities.
